Each year in late winter to early spring there will be a variety of scholarships available from Local 1009 the PFFM and the AFL-CIO.  Each year, when we receive the application information we will post all pertinent material in this section.



Local 1009 Scholarship

Applications for the Local 1009 Scholarships are being accepted now thru June 1, 2023.

Scholarship Criteria

1. Applicant must be a graduating High School senior who will be attending college in the fall of 2023 as a freshman.

2. Applicant must be a son or daughter of an active, deceased or retired member of Local 1009.

Applicants must include the following items to complete the application packet:

1. Applicants name along with the name of the active Local 1009 member they are related to.

2. Three (3) letters of recommendation. At least one letter must be from the applicants High School Guidance Counselor.

3. Copy of the applicants High School Transcript.  

4. Copy of an acceptance letter from the College or University the applicant will be attending.

5. A short biography of extracurricular activities.

Massachusetts AFL-CIO Scholarship

MASSACHUSETTS AFL-CIO 65th ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM CRITERIA The Massachusetts AFL-CIO Scholarships are available to all high school seniors living in Massachusetts. Students with union affiliation will be eligible for both the Mass AFL-CIO scholarships as well as the union scholarships offered by the union that the student is affiliated with.
Greater Worcester Community Organization-December 3rd Scholarship

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation has announced that their annual December 3rd scholarship is now available. This scholarship is available to high school seniors, and others, who are planning to attend college in the fall of 2023.  Application deadline is March 1, 2023.

  • Students must apply online at Logon - Scholarship Lifecycle Manager (grantinterface.com) 
  • Students who submit a complete application by March 1st by 5:00pm will be reviewed for 138 separate awards, ranging from $300 to $5,000.  Average award is $1,500.00.
  • Students may receive more than one award
  • There is no fee to apply
  • Applicants must provide family financial information (FAFSA), a personal essay and a resume. A current transcript and letter of recommendation must also be submitted for each applicant from their Guidance Officer, Registrar, and/or a teacher. ALL the required paperwork must be submitted or the application will be incomplete.
  • Students should begin their applications by February 15th at the latest, allowing 2 weeks to fill out and obtain a transcript and recommendation from their Guidance staff.
  • Please follow directions carefully on attached documents.

Capt. James McDonald Memorial Scholarship

The Captain James L. McDonald Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually at Quinsigamond Community College.

Candidates for application for the Captain James L. McDonald Memorial Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

1. Be a Worcester Public High School graduate attending Quinsigamond Community College.

2. Must be enrolled in and majoring in the Fire Science Program.

3. Candidates and award recipients can reapply annually.

Jennings Memorial Scholarship

It is that time of year again when the John J. and Nora Jennings Memorial Scholarship is opened and is now accepting applications for 2021.  We encourage you to apply and we look forward to reading all applications and 2021 essays.  This information has been posted to PFFM.org for your convenience and our application and 2021 essay can be downloaded from the PFFM’s website as well.  

The Jennings Scholarship Committee will provide eight 2,500.00 scholarships to children (biological and adopted) of active, deceased or retired members of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts who are currently enrolled or will be attending any College, University, Graduate or Post Graduate Studies this coming fall. 

Please mail both your 2021 essay and application to the below address and must be postmarked no later April 30, 2021

Central Mass AFL-CIO Scholarship

Central Mass AFL-CIO is pleased to announce that they will be awarding six $1,000 scholarships as well as a number of $500 Platinum sponsored scholarships.

The recipients will be drawn by lottery at the May community services committee meeting and the winners will be announced at the Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on Friday June 2, 2023.

The Scholarships will be presented at the Labor Day breakfast September 4, 2023.

Eligibility

1. Student must be a 2023 graduating High School senior going on to college.

2. Student must be a child, grandchild or member whose local is affiliated with the Central Massachusetts AFL-CIO.

3. Union members must live or work in the jurisdiction of the Central Massachusetts AFL-CIO.

Dustin Alward Memorial Scholarship

The T. Dustin Alward Memorial Fund is interested in assisting 2022 graduating high school seniors to secure the advantages of post secondary/college education through the funds raised by the Trustees of T. Dustin Alward Memorial Fund. The Trustees will award at least 10 scholarships: a $1,000.00 scholarship to students attending a 4-year college or a $500.00 scholarship to students attending a 2-year college. These scholarships will be awarded to students demonstrating financial need and scholastic aptitude, as well as good citizenship. Scholarships will be awarded on behalf of the T. Dustin Alward Family.

APPLICATION MUST BE RETURNED NO LATER THAN MARCH 31, 2022.

The rules governing scholarships assistance are as follows:

1. No distinction as to race, color, creed or sex shall be drawn in the granting of assistance.

2. Applicants must have a parent or legal guardian, who is a member in good standing of the

Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts or a parent, grand parent or legal guardian who is

retired or is a deceased member of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts.

3. The candidate must be accepted at an accredited post secondary institution.

4. No assistance will be provided to any student who is already receiving or anticipates

receiving a fully paid scholarship, grant or other financial aid in excess of $6,000.00

(not including repayable loans), or acceptance to any Service Academies.

All financial aid will be verified before awarding a scholarship.

5. No request for assistance will be considered until the candidate has provided a

complete application. Failure to complete the application may result in disqualification.

6. Scholarships will be made payable upon receipt of the student’s ID and

a copy of the student’s deposit from the burser’s office

7. All scholarships will be used towards school related expenses such as tuition

and books.

Applications must be returned no later than March 31, 2022.

The Thomas P. Cawley Sr. Memorial Scholarship
May 14, 2015
The Thomas P. Cawley Sr. Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student at the undergraduate level who is enrolled full-time and in good academic standing, has a minimum GPA of 2.8, shows evidence of financial need, and is a child, grandchild, or immediate family member of the Worcester Fire Department.
